One recent Thursday morning, our 27-year-old fridge was clearly not working and had not been working for at least 48 hours. Everything in the freezer had melted, and it had that hot smell when you opened the fridge-side door. It was the hot smell that gave it away because, curiously enough, both lights still worked when the doors were opened. That’s why I hadn’t noticed.
The fridge guy was called. He said the gas was leaking and the fan was burnt out. He explained what was what and how was how, but the long and short of it was it made more sense to just buy a new one. Easier said than done, though, since I had no money for that. Or not really anyway. But this was an emergency, and if I had to, I could, and I guess I had to. So we (me and one brother) started the search. Then another brother declared he had a fridge he wasn’t using. Why is it not important, besides it being part of God’s plan, which it clearly was? So the plan was made and set – Saturday would be the switch day.
Come Friday morning, I open the fridge door, and a blast of cool air hits me. I close it back, open it again, and stick my hand in. Cool, almost cold air greets me. What the heck!? The fridge guy had done nothing to it. Just left it on. But it’s working! Even the freezer side. A couple of things had unknowingly been left in there, and now they were frozen. Whaaat? How?! The fridge guy was perplexed. All he kept saying was, “Put a tray of ice in there.” So we did. By the end of the day, it too was frozen.
I don’t know if it’s still working. We gave it to the church. But, up to when we unplugged it on Saturday afternoon, it was.
I believe God wanted us to change it. And He wanted to free up space on the brother’s balcony. He also wanted us to repurpose the cupboard that was in the way of the new fridge for the laundry. And everything could and would be done without hiring outsiders or spending a bag o’ money. The fridge guy has charged us nothing. Just a miracle. I have no other explanation. Do you?
I can’t even start with naming all the things to be thankful for here. There are so many. I hope this miracle fridge keeps going and is a blessing to its new home as it’s been to us. I’m going to miss it.
Giving thanks for another miracle!
