Pro-life Teacher Dismissed Over Anti-Abortion Views

A Christian teacher in the United Kingdom has taken legal action at an employment tribunal, after a school in northern England dismissed her for expressing pro-life beliefs on abortion.

The issue stemmed from a history lesson at Biddick Academy, in Washington, Sunderland, in which, 63-year-old Anita Meston, was asked if she supported abortion.

She shared that her Christian faith and her personal knowledge of women who regretted having abortions resulted in her  choice to condemn the act. A student replied they knew of women who did not regret their abortions , to which she said “Fair enough.”

The next day, the headteacher called a meeting with Meston to report that a student had filed a complaint and that school rules bar staff members from expressing personal views in the classroom. Her teaching contract was then terminated. At the time, she had been teaching at Biddick for six months and had recently extended her supply contract. Meston taught for 28 years and joined the school’s staff in October 2024 as a French teacher and cover tutor.

Meston insisted that she told students her beliefs only after they  asked direct questions.

“I am profoundly shocked by Biddick Academy’s decision to dismiss me for my faith-based, pro-life beliefs and other mainstream personal and political views,” she said. “I do not believe it is a teacher’s role to impose beliefs unrelated to the lesson in the classroom. I merely acknowledged my students’ questions and provided truthful answers before redirecting them back to the lesson at hand.”

“What happened to me is nothing short of censorship, and this precedent cannot be allowed to stand,” Meston also stated.

Meston is being represented by Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF) UK in the person of legal counsel, Jeremiah Igunnubole.

“If teachers lose their jobs solely for views that students or staff disagree with, the next generation will learn that it is acceptable to censor opinions they dislike,” he said.

He also stated that the incident poses a risk for the future of fundamental freedoms in the society.

“Schools are places of learning, and teachers should be able to accompany students as they grapple with moral and social issues, including by offering truthful answers to their questions,” he also said. “A teacher-student relationship that is characterized by fear and self-censorship is antithetical to learning.”

“The law protects all employees from discriminatory treatment,” he added, “We are supporting Anita to uphold her rights as a Christian in the workplace and to reaffirm that employers cannot fire staff merely because they disagree with their Christian beliefs.”
