Free Town Primary PEP Top Boy and Girl: Focus saw them through

Jarvinia Blake and Kyle Roper have one thing in common, and that is the involvement of parents and teachers who pushed them to be their best and helped them to look past distractions to focus on the task ahead.

Jarvinia, who topped the school in the Primary Exit Profile examinations, will, like her schoolmate, be heading to Glenmuir High School in September.

Commenting on getting her first choice, Blake said she had no doubt she would have been placed there.

Honestly, when I found out that I passed for Glenmuir, I was not surprised because I believed that I would pass for there. My parents were very happy and proud of me,” she shared, revealing that they even rewarded her with money!

Jarvenia, who confessed that she hated studying, said that most evenings she doesn’t revise for more than 30 minutes.

“My mother sometimes pressures me to study because I am not a person who likes to study a lot, but she encourages me, and she is happy,” she confessed.

The youngster who lives in Longville Park in Clarendon, acknowledges that come September, she will have to “buckle down” and get into the habit of studying as the challenge will be greater.

Jarvinia is not even a first form student yet, but she already knows just what she wants to do with her life, which is to  run a restaurant business.

“From a young age, I thought of having my own restaurant one day. I love business. My father is a cook,” she gushed as she said she always dreamed of owning a business, and a restaurant would be it.

Kyle Roper said he had no choice when it came to putting in the work of studying, as  his parents always ensured that studying was first and foremost, whether he wanted to or not. He was allowed some fun once his studies were out of the way.

Commenting on his support system, he said his teacher Herma Patterson Hall provided guidance, while his mother and grandmother provided strong support for him.

“Whatever I needed and whenever I needed it, especially if it was contributing to my studies and my well-being, they have been there during ups and downs. They are a very strong source of help for me,” he praised.

His road to his PEP exams did not come without challenges, but he said he skipped over the hurdles with the help of his teacher and family.

“Everyone came together and tried so hard to ensure that all the elements needed for me to overcome those challenges were at hand, and so I am here today,” he stated.

Come September, Kyle is looking forward to meeting new people, exploring his new school environment, learning new things, and most of all, having fun.
