African nation MP encourages Jamaica to stand for righteousness
A Ugandan legislator who visited Jamaica for the first time last week is confident that this country has sufficient resources to maintain its people should the international community withdraw its support based on its continued refusal to accept homosexuality.
Member of Parliament for Agago West County in northern Uganda, David Lagen, said he felt very much at home in Jamaica during his visit.
“I’m impressed with the environment in Jamaica. The environment is like Uganda,” said Lagen, who was on the island for the launch of three books written by former journalist, now missionary, Donna Hussey-Stewart.
Uganda passed one of the world’s toughest anti-LGBTQ laws last year. The move has attracted harsh criticism and penalties from Western countries and aid donors.
“Indeed, when the bill was passed, there was a lot of pressure from the Western world. The World Bank said they would withdraw their funding, [and] the US said they would withdraw their funding. But then our government said, ‘Yes, we have made the decision already. If you want to withdraw your support, it is ok; go ahead and withdraw your support,’” he told the Freedom Come Rain.
Lagen said his country looked to God as its source, and despite the withdrawal of support, the country with a population of 47 million people has been doing well. Citizens have been farming the land, and there are minerals and oils that they are about to start extracting. Since their bold stance, Uganda has discovered gold, which can finance the population for hundreds of years, and the country continues to attract a lot of tourists.
“In Uganda, God has been providing because we believe in Him. We believe in a God of action,” he said.
Lagen said that based on his travel to Jamaica, he has seen a lot of wastelands, and there are forests and an abundance of water. Jamaica is surrounded by the Caribbean Sea.
“The resources that are in Jamaica here, if the government sits down and plans very effectively, they would utilise the resources in Jamaica to sustain the work of the people in Jamaica without depending on foreign aid, and God would give them the wisdom, He would give them the knowledge, He would give them understanding, [and] He would give them corporations for them to strategise and see the resources,” the member of parliament stated.
Lagen maintained that it is good that countries network, and international relations are encouraged; however, countries must respect each other’s laws and sovereign authority.
He believes the churches in Jamaica have a responsibility to ensure moral and Biblical standards are upheld.
“It is time for the churches in Jamaica to take up the mantles, the mandates, the assignments, and the responsibility given to them by God. I feel this is the season, and this is the time that the churches in Jamaica need to come together in unity. Unite for a purpose, and the purpose is building the Kingdom of God on earth because that is the very purpose for which Jesus came and died,” he said.
“The church has the responsibility to take charge of the affairs of the earth. They are supposed to equip the people, they are supposed to create awareness, they are supposed to bring the gospel of peace and prosperity, they are supposed to bring the gospel of righteousness and holiness, they are supposed to speak to the nations, they are supposed to mentor government, to be responsible citizens who fear God,” the Ugandan government official added.
In Europe and countries such as Canada, the United Kingdom, and the US, churches have become divided over issues such as same-sex marriage and abortion. Laws are also being crafted to silence those with strong stances against secular lifestyles, but Lagen asserted that the church should stand firm on Biblical principles.
Hussey-Stewart has provided information on how to fight ungodly agendas through a series of books, “Taking Back Our Children from the Clutches of Satan,” “Taking Back Our Nation From the Clutches of Satan,” and “Taking Back Our Family From the Clutches of Satan.” During the book launch held recently in St. Andrew, she urged Jamaicans to continue to stand for righteousness as the nation’s children and families are under attack. All three books are available on Amazon.
