Geraldine Easy is the mother of a grown son, and she makes no apologies for the way she raised him. In fact, she is giving God thanks because she gave him the foundation he needed to find his way in life.
Her parents had ensured she had a solid foundation by consistently taking her to church after she was christened in the Church of God of Prophecy. She has been serving for the last 58 years and has been active in every ministry except for the men’s group.
Stressing her love and commitment to Christ, Easy said that as a Christian mother she ensured she took her son to church with her every single time.
“One of the problems I find nowadays, and I see it in my local church (Bustamante Highway Church of God of Prophecy), is that people come into church and their children are at home. I wasn’t brought up like that, so I didn’t bring my son up like that. So even though he is not a committed Christian now, he was with me every single time. I never left him at home, and he was very active,” she shared about his upbringing.
She said her son used to be one of the drummers at church.
Being brought up in a Christian home and in the church community, she said, heavily influenced the way she parented.
“I was brought up in a Christian home, and I think it is the best foundation any child can have,” she stressed.
She accepted Christ at age 13, but got pregnant outside of marriage. Still, her love for Christ saw her clinging and “getting up back” to continue her ministry.
“I never left. I stopped for a few months, had my baby, and went back to church. I think that it is the best foundation you can have. If you have parents who are committed Christians, and even as a young person, when you might feel like you’re fed up and all the rest of it, it moulds you; it makes you into a better person,” she continued.
As someone who successfully navigated her way through raising her son, Easy has one word for mothers who may be struggling to find the balance in tackling work, motherhood and church activities. That word is commitment.
“I would say, make a commitment, make a decision, set goals; it’s like you know what you are going to do. Let me give you an example: When Christopher (my son) was in primary school, I was the youth leader at church, and I made the decision that, as the youth leader, I was going to be committed to that and I was going to be at every youth service as far as possible,” she shared, adding that she never missed a service as she had already set goals.
She made up her mind that she would get the job done, and on top of that commitment was ensuring her son was involved in the activities.
“Although everything we do as Christians is important, I would encourage any parent to get their child involved as well. Don’t just be the Christian person and you are doing this and the other, and you don’t involve your children; get them into Sunday school; get them involved in youth ministry.
Because a lot of times young people say church is boring, it’s only boring when they are not involved,” she highlighted.
