Letter to the Editor: Righteousness makes a nation great; not worldly pleasures

Dear Editor,

Once a wise man said:  “To have knowledge, you must first have reverence for the Lord.  Stupid people have no respect for wisdom, and refuse to learn.” (Proverbs 1:7, Good News Translation).  Having reverence for God leads us to obey the One, who is all wise and all knowing.  God’s instruction for us is the best guidance that anyone can offer.  To refuse this guidance, we have defeated ourselves.

On the other hand, the apostle Paul reveals in 1st Corinthians 3:19-20 (Good News Translation), that “what this world considers to be wisdom is nonsense in God’s sight.  As the Scripture says, “God traps the wise in their cleverness, the Lord knows that the thoughts of the wise are worthless.”

This brings me to a great concern about carnival, which some people embrace for both worldly pleasure and monetary gain.  They close their eyes to the negative impacts it has on the society.  Firstly, what are you exposing our children to when they see adults exposing the parts of their body that should be covered, and shamelessly wining on whomever come their way.  Is this what you want our children to imitate?  No wonder so many young girls are parading around half-naked, and have no embarrassment about it.  The result is early pregnancy, school drop-outs, increased poverty, single parent homes, and the list goes on.  Secondly, the wise man, Solomon, who was also a rich man, says:  “When the king is concerned with justice, the nation will be strong, but when he is only concerned with money, he will ruin his country.”  (Proverbs 29:4, Good News Translation).

The garbage that was left behind on the streets is a symbol of the garbage of carnival.  There is nothing that is constructive about carnival, but only destructive, as the Scripture says:  “Will people gain anything if they win the whole world but are themselves lost or defeated?  Of course not!”  (Luke 9:25, Good News Translation).

This government seems to have the view that gaining material things is what matters.  This is a great deception and delusion that they govern this country on.  We, the citizens, are greatly dissatisfied with such a governance.

We embrace having reverence for God, and doing His will.  That is what makes a nation great.  “Righteousness makes a nation great;  sin is a disgrace to any nation.”  (Proverbs 14:34, Good News Translation)

To God be all the glory!

I am,
