Letter to the Editor: No repentance in the grave

Dear Editor,

Physical death is the second death that mankind will experience. This is complete separation from the physical realm, the earth. It is the end of the existence of the physical body or the physical life. In the book of Hebrews 9:27, we’re are told, that, “It is appointed unto man once to die  (physically), but after this comes the judgement.” The Scriptures, further state, “There is no repentance in the grave. Ecclesiastical 9:10b, “…for their is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, whither thou goest,” KJV.

Our physical existence  is not to be taken for granted, but embraced as a privilege. Man was made on ‘contract’, which makes him accountable for what is done in his physical body and life. For example, your DNA, the retina of your eyes, and your fingerprints – all of these personal specs are evidence of our individuality, and confirm our accountability for the life we live. Moreover, not only are we accountable, but we have an appointment with death, Hebrews 9:27, because the physical life is also temporal.

While we are alive in the body, it is the available time  to make the decision for the spiritual life or eternity. Man is a spiritual being, hosted in a physical body at conception, and must make the decision for his eternal destiny before the appointed time of death. The psalmist requested, ” “Teach me to number my days, that I may apply my heart unto wisdom,” Psalm 90:12, KJV.

The most important decision we will ever make in our lives, is the decision for our ‘Eternal Destiny.’  The physical life is temporal and the end uncertain.

Eternal Death is the final death. It is eternal separation from our God, Maker, and Saviour. It is eternal torment in a devil’s hell, which is eternal life imprisonment, in isolation, Matt 25:41. “Then will he say to those on His left, ” Depart from Me, you cursed into external fire, prepare for the devil and his angels,” ESV.

Moreover, those who go there will have the privilege to see the joy of those who made the choice for eternity with their God and Maker, Luke16:23-24,  “And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom. And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame.” This is eternal flame.

The Lord Jesus Christ in one of His sermons,  told the audience, “hell is made for the devil and his angels.” But those who do not know God and do not obey the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ,  will join the devil and his host. Sin has a reward, “The wages of sin is death, (eternal separation,  from the presence of the Lord Jesus and His saints), but the gift of God is eternal life in Jesus Christ.” In the book of Romans 5:8, it tells us that, “But God commended (demonstrated) His love toward us, in that, while we’re yet sinners Christ died for us.” The Scriptures declare that, “God made Him to be sin for us who knew no sin. The just for the unjust.”

Though we are sentenced to spiritual death, and are temporarily separated from our Creator; and physical death is inevitable, the appointment with death demands that we must embrace the gift of God, eternal life, or reject it, and embrace eternal death, in an eternity without the Lord God. “For God so love the world, that He gave us His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him, should not perish (experience eternal death), but have everlasting life.”

Physical death is not final because eternal death lurks beyond the grave. Jesus Christ is God the Father’s only answer to our ‘Death Crisis.’ “The seed of the woman shall crush the devil’s head and he shall bruise his heel,” Genesis 3:15. Bless you.

I am,

Rainford Williams,

A servant of the Lord Jesus Christ
