For years, dancehall selector Adrian Banton had the crowd in a frenzy as he spun just the right selections, but these days he is more excited about playing soul-stirring gospel and using his voice to minister songs that speak to the spirit.
Hailing from the community of Spring Village, St. Catherine, AGB (A God Boy) still remembers the night God called him out of the dancehall.
It was 2017, and he was at a dance one night when he was convicted of his sins. “I felt a presence around me and I told my manager that God was calling me, and I’m going. On October 17, 2017, I left the dance hall. That was it,” he recalls, disclosing how gospel music started popping up in his head after that. This he saw as God demonstrating that he had been transformed from being a secular selector to being a gospel artiste.
AGB shares that after being saved, he has had to cling tenaciously to his faith so he could “ride out the storms” that have blown his way. He admits that the journey has not been easy. “I’ve been through a lot since I gave my life to Christ. Before, I never had so many problems, but since I gave my life to Christ, the problems started, but I began to look at this like: it’s a test. Every test is a testimony, and every test you pass, you get a higher grade, and you move up in rank,” he stated.
COVID-19 TOOK 9 FAMILY MEMBERS
The COVID-19 pandemic was the most difficult for him, as he lost nine family members, the most significant being his father, who, after spending three weeks in a New York hospital, passed away. AGB is still reeling from that pain, as he never got to tell him goodbye for he was in Florida at the time.
“That really hurt more than anything else. I was depressed, I’m not lying to you, I was like, really down, but God gave an apostle a word for me during that period, which was, ‘keep your focus on Him, don’t worry about your father.’” AGB said his spirit was lifted and he started worshipping.
ALBUM RELEASE
AGB has now been making quite an impact through his Christ-filled message music in recent months. He released an album on October 17, 2020, entitled “Lord Use me” which has received significant feedback in album sales and from his overall fanbase.
The Florida-based artiste penned the 10-track album that is now available on all streaming platforms and receiving great reviews worldwide. He also engages his audience on the Kingdom Biz show via Facebook with uplifting music and dynamic discussions on the Word of God.
With regards to his music and what he places on his streaming platforms, he promises that “fans can expect good quality music, mostly strongly message music to lead them to Christ. It’s about Christ. I’m a messenger. I’m a messenger more than an artiste because I get my songs from God,” he declared.
“Songs just play in my head. I don’t sit and think about them; you know, I pray to God, and we talk on a regular basis, and God gives me my songs as messages. I think all my songs are messages because they mean something, and they all lead you to Christ.”
When quizzed about his musical inspirations, AGB A God Boy mentioned Tyrone “Papa San” Thompson, who was also in the dancehall arena but left to embrace Christianity and is now the pastor of the church that he attends.
“When I was in the secular world, Papa San was always my inspiration, and now he’s my pastor.”
