Naturally, we are not good; it comes from God. Therefore, couples should seek Christ to be like Him in marriage. It is a selfless approach that seeks the best interest of the other. Constantly pursuing personal benefit to the neglect of our partner is something we should guard against. It requires the help of the Holy Spirit to bring us to a point of deliberate action in going beyond self to reaching the other. When an environment of goodness is created, it produces a positive relation. Consider if both persons are always seeking to do good to each other, then both will be well because their spouse is looking out for them all the time.
A Good Attitude
A higher level of operating as couples in creating an environment of goodness is responding to unfavorable situations with a good attitude or act surprising your spouse. This will certainly require the help of God as mentioned earlier because by human nature we want to return bad for evil. However, when we go against that and respond with goodness, we change the atmosphere. We should remember that we help to create the environment we want in marriage. In our actions and responses, let us consider the relation we want and allow that to influence our behaviour.
Outdo Each Other
If you have been doing good for each other, continue to do well and even step it up a notch. Couples can try to outdo each other in kind acts in a fun and competitive way. If we have entertained a negative environment so far, it is not too late to re-create the desired atmosphere for your marriage. At the start of a new year, people usually use the opportunity to forget the old and start anew. We can begin with the simple, small things that are meaningful to our spouse yet goes a long way.
God’s Presence Entertains Goodness
Let us not give the enemy a foothold in our marriage. Rather, let us encourage God’s presence which entertains goodness towards each other. In observing these, surely goodness will follow us in our marriage.
