Devotional: Adam, Where Are You?

By Shelia Clarke

And the LORD God called unto Adam, and said unto him, Where art thou? And he said, I heard thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself. Genesis 3:9-10

What is our response to God today when He is asking: “Where are you?”

Let us each put our name in place of Adam’s.

Is it a case that God looked forward to fellowshipping with us when we would rise in the wee hours of the morning just to meet with Him but then something happened and He cannot find us in that meeting place, in that ‘garden’, anymore? Are we conducting our time with the LORD the way that Jesus would come away from the crowd just to be alone with His Father?

What caused us to feel ‘naked?’ What did the devil say to us that made us believe his deceptive speech?

Have we forgotten he tried it on Jesus? “…if thou be the Son of God…” But Jesus knows who He is and so no devil from hell could deceive Him and move Him out of His place.

God loves us so much that He enjoys us when our hearts are one with Him because in ‘that place’, we are fully surrendered and He always gets our “Yes.” What are we willing to do now to get back into the garden with Him?Are we going to humble ourselves? God is more than willing to be married to the backslider.

Turn, O backsliding children, saith the LORD; for I am married unto you: and I will take you one of a city, and two of a family, and I will bring you to Zion. Jer 3:14

It is high time for us to get to know the heart of God and draw closer to Him because He never exited the garden; we did. God is always waiting for us to return to Him and His promises are always true.

Be strong and of a good courage, fear not, nor be afraid of them: for the LORD thy God, he it is that doth go with thee; he will not fail thee, nor forsake thee. Deu 31:6

Let us get it together. God is always longing for us; He is willing to clothe us so there is no need for us to stay ‘naked’ – that’s the reason He sent His son Jesus to die for us, so that His blood can ‘cover’ us.

May God help us to stay in His presence so that the question will not have to be asked of us: “Where are you?”
