Devotional: The mystery of nothing

“I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.”John 15:5 NIV

There is an important secret to life that was revealed by Jesus in John 15. He told us – apart from Him, we can do nothing. But, with all the things we are working, stewing, and causing, how can this be? Here in lies the mystery…

Anything that is outside of the will, Word and way of God, though seemingly significant and successful in the natural, will be converted to nothing, in the currency of God.

God is spirit, God is eternal; the spirit and the Word are eternal. Because the realm and reality of the spirit are primary and judicial, this is where we must shift our priority and also build from. The spiritual is the primary realm and it is also the basis on which everything will be weighed and judged.

We can garner this principle from other teachings. For example, the Bible tells us that man looks at the outward appearance of things, but God looks at the heart. This means we can be so impressed, inspired and ignited by what someone achieves and does in this world, but in the eyes of God it means and equates to zero…to nothing.

Another example is God telling us that He knows the plans He has for us. This means that at the end of the day, our faithfulness and fulfilment of purpose are a measure against God’s plan, and not ours.  The only true measure of success and wholeness is against what God has said.

We must allow our minds, hearts, and senses to be renewed and tuned to the realm of the spirit, but only through the leading and guidance of the Holy Spirit. Otherwise, we will be misdirected, misused, and misinformed about what God has already said and established. It is not for us to devise our own plans and interpretations, based on the structures, cultures, allures, or colours of the world, but it is for us to seek and submit to God’s master plan and process for each of us.

Grasp the mystery of nothing and purpose to make your true worth and weight something.
Shalom!
