Spanish football has been plunged into mourning following the tragic death of CD Tenerife striker Jesús de Miguel after an on-field collision during Monday’s second-division encounter against FC Andorra.
What began as an ordinary football match ended in heartbreaking circumstances as the 30-year-old forward lost his life following a collision with Andorra goalkeeper Jesús Owono.
The incident occurred seven minutes into stoppage time, with the score tied at 2-2, when Owono rushed from his goal to challenge De Miguel for a long ball near the centre circle. The goalkeeper’s knee appeared to strike the striker in the chest, leaving him motionless on the pitch.
Medical personnel immediately attended to De Miguel before he was transported to hospital with serious head and chest injuries. Reports from Spanish media indicated that he suffered cardiac arrest while being taken to hospital.
Tenerife initially described his condition as stable but serious. However, his health deteriorated in the early hours of Tuesday, with the club confirming his death at 8:00 a.m. local time.
In an emotional statement, Tenerife expressed its devastation, saying: “There are no words of comfort; there is absolutely nothing that can ease this overwhelming sense of sadness.”
The tragedy has sent shockwaves throughout the football fraternity, with clubs and prominent players expressing their condolences. Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappé, Gerard Piqué, Manchester United and Liverpool were among those paying tribute.
FC Andorra also expressed its profound sadness, extending condolences to De Miguel’s family, teammates and everyone associated with Tenerife. The club has offered psychological support to players and staff affected by the incident.
The Spanish football federation postponed several Copa del Rey and Copa de la Reina fixtures, while UEFA announced moments of silence at its matches in remembrance of the striker.
Beyond the tragic circumstances of his death, De Miguel leaves behind a promising football career. Born in Madrid, he began his senior career with Leganés B in 2015 before representing several Spanish clubs, including Fuenlabrada and Castellón.
He joined Tenerife in 2025 on a three-year contract, scoring 11 goals in 29 appearances. He also played an important role in Castellón’s promotion campaign, scoring 16 goals during his time at the club.
Away from football, De Miguel leaves behind his wife and young daughter, Carla, who was born in 2025.
Spanish police have opened an investigation into possible involuntary manslaughter. However, authorities have explained that such inquiries are routine under Spanish law when a death is deemed non-natural. No criminal responsibility has been established.
Tenerife president Felipe Miñambres acknowledged that players and their families would need professional assistance to cope with the devastating loss. The club has also requested the postponement of its upcoming league fixture against Granada.
As supporters gather to lay flowers and pay their respects, De Miguel’s passing serves as a painful reminder of life’s fragility.
At just 30, he had much more to offer, both as a footballer and as a family man. His final appearance will forever be remembered not for the result, but for the heartbreaking tragedy that unfolded.
Jesús de Miguel’s death leaves a void in Tenerife and Spanish football, with a family, teammates and supporters left to mourn a life taken far too soon.
