“God is our source”: Christian teachers push back against LGBTQ agenda despite job loss threat

Christian educators opposing the normalisation of the LGBTQ push in schools are being called homophobic and are facing the risk of losing their jobs for their stance.

These teachers are determined to maintain their righteous stance against the ungodly lifestyle even though some have lost the respect of their peers who have remained silent on the same-sex agenda.

One Christian educator at a prominent co-ed school in the corporate area said that although she is at a Christian school, administrators have essentially turned a blind eye to the escapades of students engaged in same-sex relationships. Even when they are taken to her for intervention, she is told that her moral views on the matter should not be shared with these students.

“We are told that we’re not going in there to impose our religion on anyone. So, we should not tell them our stance or how we feel about it,” said the educator.

“I told my administrator, when we were even called in a meeting about it, I told my administrator that, well, if the students ask me my stance, I will always share my stance, because I answer to a higher being. And God comes first before any administrator. So even if I have to lose my job over it, I am going to tell them the truth,” she said.

A similar sentiment was expressed by a male educator at one of the more prominent high schools in Jamaica. He too has been facing criticism for reinforcing his stance that same-sex relationships are not endorsed by God.

“I can tell you it is an unpopular opinion right now to say to any class that you believe in heterosexual [relationships] or anything along that line,” he said

Even so, his stance has been made clear to everyone.

“I stand on my Christian principle, and I’m not moving from anything. I tell them if they come into my office, I tell them point blank, it is not something that I agree with.

It is something that is not scriptural. There is no life in it. It is a dead lifestyle. Who wants to vex, vex. But just as they have their opinion and can express it, I have mine, and I can respectfully express it as well, and I am not afraid to tell my class. My class knows my stance,” he told the Freedom Come Rain newspaper.

He has often shared his concerns with school administrators, as most of the girls in these relationships are often engaged in brawls off the school compound and often underperform academically, but school administrators have turned a blind eye to this matter.

Principal of St Faith’s Primary, La Sonja Harris, said the concern about the gay lifestyle in schools is one which comes up in discussions with colleagues. Much of her 20 years as an educator were spent teaching at an all-girl secondary school and she also attended an all-girl high school, but she was shocked to see a group of girls from a co-ed institution outfitted in masculine attire during a recent trip to one of the malls in Constant Spring.

“It was disconcerting. It was really troubling in the spirit when I saw them, and it struck me in particular because it was a co-educational facility, you know, and how is it that they were just moving about? It wasn’t girly; it wasn’t feminine, that kind of thing,” she said.

“So, you know, it is a challenge in talking to colleagues. It comes up in conversations; it comes up, it comes up… so we know definitely it’s not limited to only boys’ schools, single-sex schools, like only boys or only girls, where it is a feature. It seems to be happening in co-educational facilities,” she said.

The educator from the co-ed institution told the Freedom Come Rain newspaper that Christian teachers are often told the LGBTQ matter seems to be the only issue of concern to them and are chastised by their peers. She advised those opposed to the lifestyle to continue maintaining their stance, although in more developed countries, educators are being fired for not affirming the preferred pronoun of their students.

“The jobs where we are working are not our source. God is our source. And even if we should lose that job, God can provide for us, and guess what? You might be holding on to it and breaching,” she said before adding. “You’re in breach of your godly principles and laws. But something else can cause you to get fired, so what is it that you’re really holding on to? So I always say, put God first. Let God be your guide. If this causes you to lose your job, that means God has something else in store for you. And He is your ultimate source. And He promised to never leave nor forsake us.”
