The Black River Hospital (BRH) in St. Elizabeth is the latest hospital to benefit
from the kindness of 12-year-old philanthropist, Jazmin Headley, who has
pledged to open a Jazmin Headley corner at all hospitals in need in
Jamaica.
The Jazmin ‘Jazzy’ Headley Corner is an inviting and comfortable space
with toys and books for young patients to play and read. The Canadian-Jamaican actress/singer donated hundreds of toys to the BRH on Thursday, October 24.
“It means a lot to me that I am able to get all these toys to this hospital. I
do plan to get toys in all hospitals in Jamaica that’s in need. I will replenish
this corner every year and donate more and more toys as I go. I would
like to say thank you to my mom and dad, friends and family who did a
lot of advocating for the donation” Jazmin explained.
When asked why she decided to start donating, Jazmin explained that: “I
started donating toys to Jamaica and in general because I used to have a
lot of toys growing up. My brother an
d I got a lot of toys for our birthdays
and we would use them for a day or two and then toss them away. My
mom started saying you guys waste all your toys and we never had all
these toys growing up in Jamaica and you are just wasting them, throwing
them away and forgetting about them. That’s when my brother and I
decided to donate all the toys to Jamaica and I kept up with it and that’s
how I started the Jazmin Headley Foundation and the Jazmin Headley
Corner” the 12-year old pointed out.
Certified neonatology specialist nurse at the BRH, who is also the
LASCO/NAJ Nurse of the Year, Abigail James thanked Jazmin for
considering the hospital for the kind donation.
“Thank you for considering my unit, the paediatric ward, for the kids who
are not feeling well. This helps to brighten their day. I want to extend
heartfelt gratitude to you, your family, your friends, and I hope that this
foundation continues to brighten the lives of children” Nurse James told
Jazmin.
The Jazmin Headley Corner has so far been established at the May Pen
and Black River hospitals and the Kingston Public and Victoria Jubilee
hospitals.
