Jamaica will observe today as one of mourning as Queen Elizabeth ll, Britain’s longest serving monarch is laid to rest.
Dignitaries from across the globe will bid farewell to the queen at a service in Westminster Abbey starting at 5 a.m. Jamaican time. The funeral is expected to serve as both a state and religious service for the Queen who died on September 8 after a 70-year- reign. She was 96.
Governor General, Sir Patrick Allen, and Prime Minister Andrew Holness, will be attending the State Funeral for The Queen. Upon their return from the funeral, they will head the official memorial service for the Queen at the St Andrew Parish Church, while the custodes and mayors head the services in the parishes.
According to the Office of the Prime Minister, on the Day of Mourning, only authorized activities related to the day are approved, and all social events should be postponed. Church and funeral services, as well as marriage ceremonies, are exempted from this general rule.
The funeral will be broadcast live to more than 200 countries and territories worldwide and screened to crowds in parks and public spaces across the U.K. The Queen will be laid to rest alongside her late husband Prince Phillip later this evening.
