Church crushes efforts to normalise mermaid spirits in Jamaica

A trend that has seen several Jamaicans sourcing limes to wash themselves in the river has not only resulted in a shortage of the citrus on the market, but is believed to be behind an increase in road fatalities and vicious bloodbaths and pain across the country.

One TikTok user, alluding to the trend that started to take root last year, said many of those going to get their wash at the river are doing so without the full understanding of what they are getting into. The pull factor is that others who have done it before claim to have amassed wealth and physical assets, such as flashy cars and businesses, afterward.

“Do you know that when you wash off at the river and do certain things, it is a covenant? So at the end of the day, yes, the car will come, yes, the money will come, but you have to keep up with the covenant. A particular person since week, an artiste, crash and mash up one of the popular vehicles them. Do you know why that vehicle mash up? Because him go under a covenant, and he is not paying his tithes, and he is not doing what he is supposed to do,” said the TikToker whose video has since been shared on other social media platforms.

“You have made a covenant, and you are not paying your rituals; you are not doing certain things. Certain times of the year, you have to deal with a goat, you have to deal with a bird, or you have to deal with a rabbit. You have to pay the ancestors them with rum, and you have to pay the river with whatever it want. When you do not do those stuff and crosses and bad luck starts to follow you, you will turn and say is your friend a envy you, or your friend trying to do yuh something. Yuh turn and you say is your family trying to do yuh something when is you go to the river bredda and say yuh want Benz,” he said.

Recent efforts by the Freedom Come Rain team to source limes from vendors in Spanish Town proved futile. Limes are also scarce at the Coronation market in Kingston. One vendor alluded to the latest trend and said people are using the limes to take part in the river ritual, which has been promoted through music. The country’s harsh economic climate has caused some to seek wealth from demonic forces.

“When you join a covenant with the river bredda, is the mermaid yuh join a covenant with, and the mermaid is very jealous. Unnu don’t even know about these things. So you can’t say you are a gyalis after yuh go under the covenant. When you go under the covenant, if you already had a woman, you have to keep that woman alone,” said the TikToker, who admitted to amassing a lot of wealth because of his covenant with the marine kingdom. He said many persons have sought his help in getting connected to marine spirits.

“The mermaid automatically married to you, so she is going to destroy yuh,” said the man in explaining the jealousy of the mermaid and why someone in the covenant is not allowed to have multiple partners.

In another video, he shared his personal story of how the mermaid became upset with him after a lot of ladies started to be attracted to him because of his wealth. At one point, he crashed his Lexus vehicle in Montego Bay and got into trouble with the police on another occasion in the parish. As troubles started mounting for him, he said he had to ask someone to summon the mermaid on his behalf since she was upset with him. He then appeased her by giving her what she requested in order to rekindle their covenant. That video has received more than 540,000 views.

“At the end of the day, spirituality is very deep. A nuff people don’t believe in them things here, but mi can tell you that it is real,” said the business owner who claimed he is the son of a politician.

Many who speak about the high levels of witchcraft in the country are often scoffed at when they speak about the marine kingdom and the fact that mermaids or “river mumma” are real. However, those who are able to discern spiritual matters have been warning the nation that the marine spirit is being increasingly consulted. One such person is senior clergyman Apostle Jeffrey Shuttleworth, who recently presented a teaching on the marine kingdom. The pastor noted that the god Dagon is one of the elite assets of the marine kingdom, as it uses beauty and charm to entice and captivate. He explained that Dagon is half human and half fish.

“Woe be unto those religious folks out there who are dismissing talks of mermaids and mermen,” he said, while explaining that there are male and female versions of this marine spirit.

“When you hear a so-called born-again believer, and there are so many of them out there, when they hear talks about mermaid and mermen, they just hiss their teeth and dismiss it. Well, continue; this shows your ignorance. It shows your absolute ignorance of the Bible and the things of God and also the things of darkness,” he said.

In 1 Samuel 5, Dagon was knocked down in the presence of the ark of God. Apostle Shuttleworth explained that the spirit of Dagon plays a similar role to the spirit of Jezebel in the earth. Under Dagon, spirits such as Incubus and Succubus are released into the atmosphere. These spirits are the ones that often engage in sexual activities with humans in their sleep and are responsible for sexual defilement and perversion.

“You will have them being deployed depending on the assignment, depending on the breeches, depending on the open doors, depending on the strongholds, depending on the covenant,” the pastor shared.

Efforts to pay homage to the marine kingdom in Jamaica have received strong pushback from a cross-section of the church community. The establishment of a mermaid sculpture at the Montego Bay Marine Park in 2021, for example, drew the ire of many who described the artwork as a demonic symbol that would evoke marine spirits into the area and the country in general.

Globally, several ex-satanists have shared their experiences of interacting with mermaids and other marine spirits. World leaders, such as Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, have also publicly shared their experiences of going under the sea to consult other gods. The prime minister went deep underwater last year to offer prayers at the site where the ancient city of Dwarka was believed to have submerged post Lord Krishna’s demise. Modi said he offered peacock feathers as tribute. Photos of him preparing to go underwater went viral. The Hindu PM secured a third term as prime minister later that year.
