With all the concerns swirling around regarding the safety of regular deodorant, what can you, the consumer, do if you don’t want to use a natural deodorant? You can reduce the number of swipes you make under each arm when applying your favourite deodorant, and you can also refrain from swiping at all before bedtime, or when the temperature dips as you tend to sweat less then.
If you believe it’s best to err on the side of caution, though, you could try one of the many natural deodorants that are now on the market, or perhaps attempt making your own.
NATURAL DEODORANT RECIPE WITHOUT BAKING SODA
Roxanna from the blog acquaintancelife.com tells us how. She said that she discovered that a lot of people are very sensitive to baking soda, which makes her itch a lot, so she experimented with a number of different brand deodorants until she was able to settle on a recipe of her own.
She cautioned that when switching to a natural deodorant, you have to give your body time to acclimatise, as you may find your arms ‘rebelling’ at first since they have to now adapt to life without chemicals.
Ingredients
Arrowroot powder, beeswax pellets, cocoa (or shea)
butter, coconut oil, and vitamin e oil.
Instructions
Place two tablespoons of the beeswax pellets, two tablespoons of the cocoa (or shea) butter, and two tablespoons of the coconut oil into a heatproof dish that is in a pot of water over low fire [I actually added the coconut oil when everything else was almost melted, as it was already in liquid form]. You may cover the pot with a piece of foil.
When everything is liquefied, add three teaspoons of arrowroot powder and six drops of vitamin E oil and stir until completely combined. [I substituted grapeseed oil, which is rich in vitamin E, and added some rhassoul clay and lime essential oil. Oils like lavender, ylang-ylang, rose are lovely fragrances, but can make you too sedate for optimised daily functioning]
You can pour this refreshing mixture into a new deodorant container or into a glass jar. Cover when cool.
Use clean fingertips to rub a small portion of the ‘deo-butter’ all over your armpit. This batch will last about three months, so alternatively, you can scoop out a month’s supply at a time and keep the rest refrigerated.
