Marriage and the Economy

Economy is the state of a country in terms of production and consumption of goods and services and the supply of money. It is also defined as careful management of resources.

In light of recent happenings due to COVID-19, many persons have experienced job loss or a significant reduction in income. In relation to marriage, the state of the country should inform a couple or persons engaged, how to manage their finances. Weddings are a public event in which family and friends are brought together to celebrate the couple’s commitment to each other. Traditionally, it has been an expensive venture because they want to make it memorable. However, there must be a compromise, not of principles to engage in concubine relationship; rather to determine what is most important to include in the wedding. This must be in keeping with resources available to them.

Similarly, the already married couple may be experiencing financial challenges due to COVID-19. This may result in a strain on the relationship. As with most, if not all persons, it requires adjusting on both parties.

ADJUSTING TO ECONOMIC SITUATION

Ways in which couples or engaged persons should prepare to adjust to economic situation include:

  1. Adjustment in expectations (for e.g. Adjusting to low budget wedding or cutting down family meals that match spending ability.
  2. Become creative. In Jamaica, the saying goes “tun yu hand mek fashion”. For the married couple, a movie night at home with popcorn might be a more affordable option while ensuring spending time and having fun together.
In terms of generating income, the couple can consider creating a business that meets identified needs at this time (for example making and selling masks, provision of sanitizing products or food provision at persons’ convenience). Instead of placing pressure on the main breadwinner, couples should seek to become innovative and help each other meet the objective.
  3. Select priorities (Create a budget outlining most important to the least or not necessary items, and discipline self to spend accordingly).
  4. Support system from extended family members and the church. Although couples are married to each other, we should bear in mind that God designed us to be a part of a community. They offer support in weathering the challenges while helping to keep the marital relationship secure. The wisest man Solomon says, “In the midst of counsellors there is safety!” (Proverbs 11:14).
  5. Prayerfully seek God’s wisdom how to use God’s gifts and talents as a couple. “In all your ways ask Him, and He will show you what to do” (Proverbs 3:6).
