Now that the election is over

It is amazing how visible and accessible politicians become when an election nears. The same councillor who was deaf to your cries for help, suddenly have all the time in the world to listen, and money that could not be found to provide even a gallon bottle of drinking water, suddenly seems to fall like manna from heaven wrapped up  in branded t-shirts and envelops, and are dropped off at your gate.

The ‘poli-tricking’ seems to get worse every election cycle, and it makes you wonder at times if this will forever be our fate here in Jamaica? I think it will be, if citizens do not wise up. So after years of not showing their faces, some of these councillors  have showed up in recent weeks begging for votes, and people actually voted for them because of the party they are aligned to. No wonder the politicians have no problem with keeping Jamaicans dunce.

We have a tendency to praise politicians whenever they do something in their constituency, as though that was not the premise on which they were voted and are getting paid  a hefty salary to do. The way how some of our political leaders behave, you would think they are doing us a favour. Let’s hope for our sake that they do what they promised, now that this local government election is over.

I am hoping that the potholed riddled roads will be fixed across Jamaica, so that I don’t have to suck in my tummy and say a prayer for me and my car when I see them. They are really too much now. I am hoping that I don’t have to become a shut-in when rain falls because the road leading to my community is flooded because the drains aren’t being cleaned. I hope every community across Jamaica will get access to potable water, and street lights will be fixed in a more timely manner.

At the rate at which these politicians have been making promises, you would think there is nothing they are unable to do. I have not asked  for much, I hope they can deliver.

I am,

Jessica
