Political gimmickry in Jamaica

Politics in Jamaica, like anywhere else, is full of drama, excitement, and sometimes, straight-up gimmicks.

Every election season, politicians roll out their best performances—plenty of road fixing, free t-shirts, dancehall dubplates, and grand promises. But as responsible voters, we need to see past the hype and identify true leadership. So, let me break it down for you:

How most Jamaicans get tricked

1. “Patch and Dash” Road Repairs

Ever notice how roads suddenly get fixed when elections near? That’s a classic trick to make it seem like the government is working. But ask yourself—where was this effort for the past four years?

2. “Gifts Galore” Strategy

Politicians love to hand out goodies like cash, chicken, rum, zinc when elections are near. While it might seem helpful, it’s often a way to buy votes instead of bringing real long-term change.

3. “Dubplate and Dance” Tactics

Some politicians team up with dancehall artists to boost and sway voters or to create catchy campaign songs. While entertaining, this doesn’t mean they have good policies. Don’t get distracted by the vibes—check their track record.

4. “Promise You the World” Syndrome

Beware of politicians who promise major developments like new highways, free electricity, and 100,000 jobs but never explain how they’ll do it. Sweet talk with no action is a red flag.

How to Identify a Good Political Candidate

✔ Consistency Over Time – A good leader doesn’t only show up during election season. They’re consistently working to improve communities year-round.

✔ Plans Over Promises – Look for candidates who have clear, realistic plans, not just fancy speeches. If they say they’ll fix schools, do they have a budget plan for it?

✔ Integrity & Accountability – Do they take responsibility for mistakes? Are they transparent about how they use government funds? Scandals and corruption allegations are warning signs.

✔ Connection with the People – Do they listen to citizens’ concerns, or only speak to them when cameras are rolling? A good leader is always engaged, not just when votes are needed.

How to Identify a Bad Political Candidate

❌ Only Shows Up at Election Time – If you haven’t seen or heard from them for years, but suddenly they’re everywhere, that’s a red flag.

❌ Gives More Excuses than Solutions – If they always blame the last government instead of fixing issues, they might not be the right choice.

❌ Focuses on Hype Instead of Issues – If they’re more interested in clashing with opponents or throwing shade online rather than discussing real solutions, take note.

❌ History of Corruption or Broken Promises – If they have a reputation for dishonesty, missing funds, or unfulfilled promises, don’t expect them to change.

Final Advice

Politics is not about vibes and gimmicks—it’s about leadership and progress. Don’t let free t-shirts, quick road fixes, or catchy campaign songs decide your future. Research candidates, hold them accountable, and vote wisely.

Jamaica deserves real leaders, not just good entertainers. Choose wisely!
