Complete this Bible passage: “Come unto Me all who are weary and heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn of Me, for…”
How did you finish that sentence: “…My yoke is easy, and My burden is light”?
If you did, you’re not alone—I was in the same boat! Growing up, I heard this version recited countless times. It wasn’t until a few years ago, when I began writing out Scriptures to memorise, that I noticed the difference. Yet, I continued to hear others, including pastors, reciting the familiar, albeit incorrect version. This realisation amused me, for it highlighted how deeply interconnected we are as a community, sharing not just our faith but also our collective memories and habits.
It’s a fascinating example of how sayings, even Scriptural ones, can be slightly misquoted and persist and spread through generations. I believe it often happens with children who grow up in Christian households, as we tend to learn the Scriptures before we can read and write. Certainly, I learnt Psalm 1, Psalm 23, and the Lord’s Prayer before basic school.
So, what should be the next phrase in the verse?
It is, “I am meek and lowly at heart, and you’ll find rest for your souls.”
What a bold, beautiful statement! Let’s not forget that’s how our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ describes Himself—I am gentle and lowly.
Therefore, wherever you are and irrespective of your circumstances, come to Jesus as you are, and He will provide rest for your soul.
Here’s the full text from the King James Version of the Bible:
“Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light. Matt 11:28-30
