Respiratory Illnesses

The Super Flu-Bomb Recipe

Last month (April), the Ministry of Health (MOH – Jamaica) advised on its website that although the flu season had come to an end, respiratory viruses, including COVID-19 and Influenza A (H1N1), remain in circulation. The Ministry warned that members of the public should continue to “protect themselves from illness by observing infection prevention and control measures. These include handwashing, sanitising, and the practice of sneezing and coughing etiquette, especially when in public spaces.”

The MOH further stated that if people get ill, they should rest and consume more fluids, while individuals experiencing slow or no recovery should seek medical attention promptly so that specialised treatment can begin. The ministry is encouraging people to follow a healthy lifestyle by exercising regularly, eating healthy, and getting adequate rest and relaxation.

These are proven strategies “for boosting the immune system, making it less likely to be affected by the circulating viruses,” the ministry said.

SUPER FLU-BOMB RECIPE

I’ve been sharing the super flu-bomb recipe since COVID started in November 2019 or thereabouts. A number of persons have found it to be a very helpful weapon in building the immune system and combating the sniffles, colds, flu, sinusitis, COVID-19, and related ailments, especially when taken at the onset of the first tickle.

Speaking of which, I once saw an acronym for COVID that I pray you will cherish and find comforting, too. It is:

C.O.V.I.D.   —  Christ Over Viruses and Infectious Diseases.  It really is in Jesus, Son of the Living God, that we ought to place our trust and confidence.

So, the flu-bomb recipe was given to me by a friend who works at a premier public health facility in Jamaica. She had received it from a staff nurse when she contracted COVID.

Because I prefer my flu-bomb very slushy, I usually add less than half a cup of room-temperature water when blending, and I like to use purple onions, ginger, and turmeric, (which I usually wash and stash in the freezer).

Do note that ginger is getting scarce, and lemons and limes are even more rare.

The flu-bomb can be stored in a glass jar and refrigerated for months, and when you’re ready to drink, you can always thin your portion with water if you wish. Alternatively, you can have an undiluted heaping teaspoon at a time, preferably on an empty stomach.

I need not warn about the cayenne pepper, right? Unless you have a high threshold for fire at the start and fire at the end, do proceed as instructed in the recipe or just omit.

By the way, if you are able to find local cayenne pepper powder, that’s ideal; or buy the fresh peppers, dry them, and grind your own.

Why not plant some seeds today?!

CAUTION:

Please do not exceed the recommended dosage of garlic, as doing so can cause nausea in some people.

Do remember that you are responsible for your own health and that the health tips we offer are not medical advice.
