Shut them down!

With abortion being the leading cause of death globally in 2025, at least one medical doctor is calling upon the government to shut down facilities locally that place women at risk by murdering the unborn.

General practitioner Dr Sheree Simpson believes the government could do more to deter abortions, which are illegal in Jamaica, by dissolving facilities where the gruesome practice is taking place.

Statistics disclosed at the recent Kick Off Rally for the 40 Days for Life Movement revealed that approximately 10,000 abortions take place annually in Jamaica, despite laws banning this procedure.  This is a more conservative figure than the 22,000 that was estimated by …..

Dr Simpson, a Christian medical practitioner, does not believe legislators are doing enough to help save lives of the most vulnerable.

“If they cared, we could do more to strengthen our laws and to cause that where we know abortions are being done, to close them down.” She recommended

Noting the global statistics relating to abortion, Dr Simpson pointed to the importance of preserving life. While those supporting abortion have often pointed to the fact that it should be allowed when a woman or a child is raped, the medical practitioner asserted that in the event of unlawful acts such as incest and rape, the culprit may be apprehended using DNA testing on the child.

“Sometimes when the baby is born, you can utilise that, the DNA, to help you in finding who the real father is that perpetrated this rape on this child,” she stated. “And so those things, we can use the law to protect that child from one, being aborted, and also to help to find the person who did this evil.” And I think things like that should be done more rather than just acting as if you don’t know the law is there.”

The local chapter of 40 Days for Life was launched by the Christian advocacy group Love March Moment (LMM) in…… For 40 days, starting February 18, intercessors will be praying and fasting for the ending of abortions in Jamaica.

Yegal Clahar, a member of LMM, suggests that the nation’s legislators include the church in their decisions concerning abortions and other issues.

“The government should be more open to inviting the church to speak on these things, to counsel them, as well as to invite the Christian organisations as well, who are so big and so practical about helping and praying for women.”

He said that these issues often become public; however, the government does not often call for Christian groups or the church into the legislative discussions. Clahar believes that the involvement of the church in these decisions would help to convince women to reject abortion.

“I strongly believe that if the church were involved more…then the numbers would drop drastically, you know. And there would be more results of women, you know, saying no to abortion. Abortion is not just illegal, but it’s no longer being practised at all. That the practices are cancelled, you know. That the facilities that are conducting these things are closed down, shut down.

Statistics from Worldometer revealed that the citizens who are dying the most globally are unborn babies. Worldometer, which provides real-time statistics for global topics, noted that abortion was the leading cause of death worldwide in 2025.  More than 45.2 million abortions were performed in 2025, triple the number of communicable diseases for that year. While abortion came in as the leading cause of death, the second-leading cause of death was communicable diseases, with almost 13 million people.

The Worldometers total is based on a World Health Organisation fact sheet, which places the annual global abortion rate at about 39 per 1,000 women aged 15 to 49. Approximately 61% of unintended pregnancies, out of 121 million per year, ended in abortion.

Abortion exceeded all other causes of death by a wide margin. In 2025, cancer reportedly caused 10 million deaths, smoking-related illnesses 6.2 million, infectious diseases 17 million, and HIV/AIDS 2 million.
