Militant dancehall-gospel singer releases new song and video
Dancehall-gospel artist Orville Sutherland has kicked off 2024 with a new song and video called Ten A Dem. On January 19, The Gospel International imprint released the track, where Sutherland goes out for a walk and successfully confronts ten gang members with the help of his Bible.
The visuals, directed by Shemar Grant, effectively bring the story to light and underscores the point that God is able to rescue you from any situation.
A native of Clarendon, Sutherland entered the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission Gospel Festival Song Contest in 2016 with the entry song Cool Shade and walked away with the 1st runner-up prize.
Since then, he has gone from strength to strength in his musical career, recording songs such as Nothing But The Blood, God Only, Touch Not, and Nah Worry Nah Fret.
With his latest release, Ten A Dem, Sutherland glorifies the Lord, swinging his ‘B66’, causing threatening ruffians to flee!
‘Mi Bible cut like a sword… God always have mi back, Him fly di trap’… are some of the sentiments expressed in this song.
Born in Prospect, Clarendon, Sutherland is a past student of Edwin Allen and Vere Technical High schools. He went on to study at the Jamaica Theological Seminary, where he pursued a bachelor’s degree in social work and ministry.
Commenting on his passion for music, Sutherland said it is not only his calling but also his passion.
“It’s a very potent avenue, and, within the Jamaican context, gospel reggae is a great way for the message to reach the masses. My songs encourage righteousness, militancy in terms of Christianity, and standing up for the gospel. Instead of being like a lamb to the slaughter, you go out with force in terms of letting the elements know that we are no easy task to be swayed, but we are standing up for the gospel or for righteousness,” he was quoted as saying.
