World-renowned photographer and artist Howard Moo Young went to be with the LORD on Feb. 15, 2023. He was a friend of Freedom Come Rain newspaper.
In honour of his memory and love for the TBC family, we share with you some of his most beloved photographs. The narrative was also written by him and previously published in FCRain.
“On the night of April 22, 1978, 44 years ago, history was made at the National Stadium in Kingston, Jamaica, in more ways than one. The ‘One Love Concert’ brought together the people of this nation in a show of peace and unity.
Many individuals today who were in attendance at the Stadium will never forget the events that took place before a capacity crowd of 32,000 people, and we can identify a number of high-profile participants who later became born-again Believers, for example, Bob Marley, Rita Marley, Judy Mowatt, and Tommy Cowan.
GOD HAD POSITIONED ME AND I WAS READY
Only a Nikon 85mm 1.4 lens was attached to my camera and no flash. I carefully anticipated and timed all the photographs that were taken hand-held at the speed of 1/120 second, but I was supernaturally forewarned. Above the din in the stadium, the roar all around me, I heard a voice telling me to stop shooting because something was about to happen that was not scheduled on the programme and I would have to capture it for posterity. At this point, only half of a roll of film was left in my camera.
I obeyed the voice of the Holy Spirit speaking to me and quietly put the camera under my shirt as there was a light but consistent drizzle. I was waiting for the moment. After about 15 minutes, I knew the time for action had arrived when Bob Marley suddenly shouted over the microphone: “I summon Michael Manley and Edward Seaga to join me on stage!” All ‘hell broke loose’ as photographers from BBC, JIS, JBC/TV, Japan and the U.K. scampered around me, looking for film and the best location. God had already positioned me and I was READY.
I took out my camera, found my ideal spot, stood my ground and waited with bated breath. Using my entire body as a tripod, making every exposure count, I carefully captured each photograph as I did not have the chance to shoot twice. Out of this roll of images, I was awarded a Silver Medal (Commonwealth Faces – Colour) in the 1979 Commonwealth Photography Exhibition in Edmonton, Canada and two Gold Medals in Festival ’82 National Photography Competition.
Today, I am blessed to be the only photographer in the entire world with the exclusive collection of the “1978 Bob Marley One Love Concert” in full colour. Thank God that I was obedient to the voice of the Lord. One Love!
