Already, the world is on edge following an unprecedented escalation of the Venezuelan crisis when U.S. President Donald J. Trump authorised a controversial military strike on the South American country on January 3.
Having captured President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, the Trump administration immediately announced that Venezuela “will be turning over” up to 50 million barrels of oil, worth US$2.8 billion, to the US. Beijing, which imported 389,000 barrels per day of Venezuelan oil in 2025, has denounced US efforts in Venezuela and has labelled the US a bully.
Russia and other leftist allies of Venezuela have also condemned the US invasion and the capturing of Maduro and his wife, who were reportedly flown to New York to face drug-trafficking and narco-terrorism charges. The authoritarian leader, who has ruled Venezuela since the death of his predecessor, Hugo Chavez, in 2013, pleaded not guilty to narcotics charges in a Manhattan court on Monday.
In sweeping federal indictments, filed in the United States against Maduro and members of his inner circle, allegations are that unnamed Caribbean political leaders were complicit in a vast, state-sponsored cocaine trafficking network.
