Jamaica will join the rest of the world to mark World Consumer Rights Day (WCRD) on Tuesday, March 15.

The Consumer Affairs Commission, an agency of the Ministry of Industry, Investment and Commerce, will host a virtual Town Hall meeting at 10:00am with presentations by service agencies under the theme: Fair Digital Finance.

The discussions under the theme: CAC and You: Fair Digital Finance will address access, connectivity as well as how to use the available digital services.

The public is invited to log on to the Jamaica Information Service or CAC’s Youtube and Facebook platforms to participate. Presentations will be made to inform and empower consumers about the various digital services offered by state agencies.

According to the Consumer International, consumer movement marks 15th March with WCRD every year, as a means of raising global awareness about consumer rights and needs. Celebrating the day is a chance to demand that the rights of all consumers are respected and protected, and to protest market abuses and social injustices which undermine those rights.

WCRD was inspired by President John F Kennedy, who sent a special message to the US Congress on 15th March 1962, in which he formally addressed the issue of consumer rights. He was the first world leader to do so. The consumer movement first marked that date in 1983 and now uses the day every year to mobilise action on important issues and campaigns.

The week Jamaica celebrates Consumer Rights in libraries, churches, and schools. The week will begin with the NGO, the National Consumers League’s official church service on Sunday, March 13 at 8:30am at the Trinity Moravian Church at 29 Montgomery Avenue in Richmond Park in Kingston. The protocols of the pandemic will be observed.
