Tourists have started gathering at Buckingham Palace, with some reportedly in tears following news that Queen Elizabeth II is under medical supervision due to concerns about her health.
In a statement on Thursday, the palace said the 96-year-old monarch is “comfortable”. Prince Charles, the heir to the throne, his wife Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, and Prince William have all either arrived or are traveling to Balmoral, the Queen’s Scottish castle near Aberdeen.
Prince Harry and Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, will also be making the journey.
World leaders have been sending messages of support for the monarch, following the news that she is under medical supervision. Lizz Truss who was appointed Britain’s prime minister by the queen just two days ago, said the “The whole country will be deeply concerned by the news from Buckingham Palace.” “My thoughts – and the thoughts of people across our United Kingdom – are with Her Majesty the Queen and her family at this time,” she tweeted.
Queen Elizabeth II has reigned for 70 years. On Wednesday evening, she abruptly canceled a virtual meeting with members of her Privy Council after doctors advised her to rest. Although the palace stated that her doctors are concerned, details of the queen’s medical condition are not known. The palace has said in the past that she has problems with mobility and she recovered from a bout with Covid-19 in February which left her exhausted.
