The future of Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr is increasingly uncertain following the team’s elimination from the NBA Play-In Tournament, a result that may signal the end of one of the league’s most successful coaching eras.
Kerr, whose contract is set to expire, admitted in the aftermath of the loss that he is unsure about what lies ahead. “I don’t know what’s going to happen next,” Kerr said, reflecting on his future with the franchise. Despite reaffirming his passion for coaching, he acknowledged the realities of longevity in the profession. “These jobs all have an expiration date. There’s a run,” Kerr added.
The Warriors’ 111–96 defeat to the Phoenix Suns in the Play-In Tournament ended a disappointing 37–45 campaign and marked the second time in three seasons the team has missed the playoffs.
Much of the speculation surrounding Kerr’s future has been fuelled by comments from veteran forward Draymond Green on The Draymond Green Show. Green suggested that the mood within the team points toward a possible departure. “I hope he’s our coach next year… I think not, just because it just feels like that; it felt like that was it,” Green said. The four-time champion also referenced an emotional moment late in the game involving Kerr and franchise cornerstone Stephen Curry, describing it as one that “felt like” the end of a chapter.
Those sentiments have only intensified the belief that the Warriors could be approaching a transition period after more than a decade of sustained success.
Legacy already secured
Since taking over in 2014, Kerr has led Golden State to four NBA championships and six Finals appearances, transforming the franchise into a modern dynasty while redefining the league’s style of play. His tenure includes record-breaking seasons and a revolutionary offensive system built around ball movement and three-point shooting, spearheaded by stars such as Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, and Green.
Even Green acknowledged Kerr’s place in history amid the uncertainty. “If he stops today, he’s a Hall of Fame coach,” Green said, pointing to the coach’s immediate and sustained success with the organisation.
A critical offseason looms
The decision now rests with Kerr, who is expected to meet with team owner Joe Lacob and general manager Mike Dunleavy Jr. to determine the next step.
The Warriors face broader questions beyond the coaching position, including roster construction, ageing core players, and financial pressures after a costly but underwhelming season.
