For decades, Israel’s high-tech sector has served as a primary driver of the national economy. Accounting for nearly 20% of gross domestic product, 60% of exports, and a quarter of income in tax revenue, the industry earned the country its nickname the “Start-up Nation” because of the significant number of tech companies.
However, today that primary growth driver is encountering a perfect storm. Due to the rise of Artificial Intelligence (AI), similar to other countries, Israel has seen widespread job cuts driven by AI software, an accelerating brain drain worsened by military conflict, and new vulnerabilities across its democratic institutions.
Dubbed “AI layoffs,” the most immediate shockwaves are impacting the labour market. Across the software sector, major Israeli tech firms are removing significant portions of their human workforces as generative AI transforms traditional business models. Task-management giant monday.com recently announced the removal of 620 employees, which is roughly 20% of its global headcount, as it pivots toward integrating independent AI agents and altering its pricing structure.
Additionally, according to a recent article by the Jerusalem Post, website-creation platforms like Wix have cut approximately 1,000 positions, or 20% of its workforce, aiming to lean out operations despite strong growth in its AI-driven natural language coding tools. Freelance marketplaces like Fiverr had also reduced their headcount by a third last year, cutting 250 positions to retool as an AI-focused infrastructure.
Inside companies, workplace flows are shifting rapidly. Engineering managers report increasingly supervising teams of automated AI agents rather than junior developers. This shift has created an immediate constraint for recent university graduates searching for jobs. This is because some entry-level IT and software roles are disappearing, as AI tools take over routine coding and standard tasks.
Beyond direct job losses, AI disruption is increasing broader macroeconomic pressures, causing skilled labourers to leave the country. Since the outbreak of war between Israel and Iran and its regional proxies in 2025, prolonged military reserve duties, along with rising living costs, have severely strained tech operations.
Some data indicates that the share of Israeli research and development employees working domestically dropped from 69% in 2019 to 62% this year. Moreover, roughly 800 high-tech workers are relocating abroad each month, a 70% increase compared to pre-war figures. Industry analysts warn that losing these skilled workers carries severe risks not only for tax revenues, but also for Israel’s defence capabilities, which rely heavily on advanced domestic software engineering.
In response, the Israeli government has committed roughly 1 billion shekels (around $340 million USD) towards a national AI strategy alongside tax incentives designed to retain top talent. Academic and industry leaders argue that Israel can no longer compete on lower labour costs for pure software engineering. Instead, tech experts advocate pivoting toward specialized domains where Israel holds a competitive advantage, particularly “physical AI,” the application of artificial intelligence to robotics, healthcare, manufacturing, and autonomous defence systems.
The impact of AI in Israel, however, extends well beyond the corporate balance sheet and labour statistics. A comprehensive study released by the Knesset Research and Information Center warns that the country’s democratic processes face mounting exposure to AI-driven manipulation.
According to parliamentary researchers Roi Goldschmidt and Dr. Yael Levy Ariel, generative AI has dramatically lowered the cost of political influence operations. Open-source models can now generate thousands of automated social media profiles capable of conducting persuasive conversations in fluent Hebrew, spreading targeted disinformation, and executing deepfake campaigns. The report also highlights the threat of “data poisoning,” where manipulative content is deliberately fed into online training datasets to corrupt future AI outputs.
Though the impact of AI in the workplace continues to grow, Israeli authorities are attempting to manage these emerging threats under fragmented jurisdictions spanning the Central Elections Committee, the Shin Bet, the Israel Police, and the National Cyber Directorate. While a newly passed law mandates clear labeling of synthetic or AI-altered campaign material, some experts warn that disclosure mandates alone are insufficient to counter sophisticated state and non-state actors.
As Israeli high-techs navigate this transitional period, industry leaders emphasize that survival will depend on adaptation. While AI continues to displace traditional software jobs and prompt corporate restructuring, the sector’s long-term sustainability depends on whether Israel can safeguard its talent pool, pivot to advanced hardware-integrated technology, and defend its institutional stability against the digital disruption of artificial intelligence.
