A controversial billboard campaign declaring “Jesus Is Not God” is sparking debate among Christians and non-Christians in California and other parts of the United States.
The billboards, reported in the Los Angeles area and other parts of California, are part of a nationwide advertising campaign by World’s Last Chance (WLC), an internet-based religious organization founded in 2004.
The campaign challenges the doctrine of the Trinity and the belief held by most Christian denominations that Jesus Christ is fully divine and eternally God. Other messages reportedly displayed on the billboards include “God is One, Not Three-in-One” and “Jesus Did Not Pre-Exist in Heaven.”
WLC teaches that Jesus is not God in the same sense as God the Father and rejects the belief that Jesus is eternally divine. The organization also rejects the Trinity, which teaches that there is one God in three persons: the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.
The campaign has attracted attention because its message directly challenges one of the central doctrines of mainstream Christianity.
WLC describes itself as a non-denominational ministry, but its teachings differ from those of most mainstream Christian churches. The organization has also promoted other unconventional religious views, including beliefs associated with a flat Earth.
The campaign has renewed discussion about religious advertising and the range of beliefs surrounding the identity of Jesus Christ.
For Christians who accept the doctrine of the Trinity, the billboards represent a rejection of a foundational belief of their faith. For others, the campaign has prompted discussion about the historical development of Christian doctrine and differing interpretations of Jesus’ identity.
