Jamaicans are being urged to join the fight to save the life of a 28-year-old disabled man, following a ruling from a UK judge that he should be denied nutrition and hydration starting September 22 until his death.
The case involving the convalescent, who is publicly referred to as Fahim or FHR, has attracted widespread pushback. President of the Love March Movement (LMM), Dr Daniel Thomas, who has been following the developments surrounding the case, has warned that such evil acts could also make their way into the Caribbean.
Fahim sustained a catastrophic hypoxic brain injury in 2020 and was cared for by his mother, Farah, for five years before being transferred to a nursing home in 2025.
According to Christian NewsWire, his mother was prevented from seeing him for 16 months.
Farah made a video despite being under a gag order that prevents her from speaking freely. In the clip, she expressed that her son had been taken from a well-protected home, prevented from seeing his family, and deprived of his basic human rights.
Farah could face imprisonment for speaking out, but she has expressed concern about Fahim’s condition worsening after he left home.
“All the improvements he made in 5 years at home were completely destroyed,” she said.
“For 16 months, my son was deprived of his mother’s love, protection, comfort and healing, which cost him dearly.”
“No mother should ever have to go through what I went through and no vulnerable person should ever be treated in this inhuman way as my son has. Yet, here we are in a beautiful country such as Great Britain, being so brutal in how it deals with its most vulnerable citizens,” she stated.
Dr Thomas told the Freedom Come Rain Newspaper that the situation is tragic and should startle Christians and sensible human beings everywhere.
“The most important thing to understand is that this mother was taking care of her son fine! No issues! He had suffered a severe brain injury but was stabilised and discharged into her care. Now they have a kill order for him, but for what reason? Why are they so insistent on killing her son? This is evil, a thirst for killing the weak and sick,” insisted Dr Thomas, who is a medical practitioner.
In making the call for Christians to speak up, he insists that Fahim should be given back to his mother.
“As Christians, some will feel the heartbreak of the mother, while others may feel a righteous anger at this stark injustice. Whatever the case, we need to speak up!” He appealed.
“Even though this is happening in England and it appears to be far away, these same ideas and institutionalised evil can easily make their way into the Caribbean region. We need to speak up to save Fahim’s life as best we can and also stand firmly against these wicked laws,” he said.
Bobby Schindler, President of the Terri Schiavo Life & Hope Network, also disagreed with the court’s ruling.
Schindler stated, “Fahim is not a diagnosis, a disability, or a medical condition. He is a human being whose life possesses God-given, inherent dignity and value.”
Schindler was reminded of his sister, Terri Schiavo, who died from dehydration in 2005 after a court order led to the removal of her feeding tube.
“Terri’s case taught us what can happen when the lives of brain-injured individuals are placed in the hands of others who believe death is preferable to disability,” Schindler stated.
“Every human life deserves protection, especially those who cannot speak for themselves,” Schindler added.
The case has also drawn comparisons to that of Charlie Gard, a 10-month-old baby who had a rare genetic disorder known as mitochondrial DNA depletion syndrome.
Charlie’s parents appealed to the UK Supreme Court, asking the court to determine what was in the best interests of their child. After they lost the appeal, the 10-month-old was due to have his life support switched off, according to CNN Health.
Jamaicans are being urged to sign a petition concerning Fahim, as his life is reportedly set to be taken on September 22, 2026.
