Balancing the demands of marriage, motherhood, and pursuing a university degree has tested Osheen Jarrett’s resilience, but she says God has remained her source of strength throughout her journey.
Jarrett, 32, who is pursuing a degree in journalism at the University of the West Indies (UWI), Mona, said her decision to study the field stems from a love of communication and connecting with people.
“I have a passion for public speaking and enjoy interacting with others,” she said.
Balancing her studies with family life has required determination and sacrifice. Married for five years, Jarrett said her husband has remained a constant source of encouragement through illness, pregnancy, and the responsibilities of raising their one-year-old son.
“When I got married, I was very sick, but my husband stood with me and walked with me through the painful days and nights,” she recalled.
Her academic journey became even more demanding when she became pregnant. Battling fatigue, headaches, and nausea while keeping up with coursework, tested her physically and mentally.
“It was extremely difficult, especially during the second and third trimesters, but I pushed through by the grace of God,” she said.
She explained that the challenges continued after childbirth, as she had to balance assignments with the demands of caring for a newborn while continuing her studies. She credits her husband for making it possible to stay committed to her academic goals.
“My husband has been very supportive and stands with me. He takes me to school for my morning classes and keeps the baby until I finish class when he doesn’t have work. He has truly been a tower of strength,” Jarrett said.
For Jarrett, faith has been the foundation that sustained her through moments of exhaustion and uncertainty. A member of Church on the Rock, she also serves in ministry at her home church, where she often leads worship.
“My faith is everything,” she said. “There were so many times I thought of giving up, but I heard God say, ‘What I have started in your life, I will finish.’”
She also found comfort in Scripture, often reminding herself of the promise: “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”
Reflecting on her journey, Jarrett believes the experience has strengthened both her faith and her character.
“It has taught me that when I have reached my end, there is still a little more left in me. It has taught me that I am a warrior and a strong woman,” she said.
As she continues her studies, motherhood, and ministry responsibilities, Jarrett hopes her testimony will encourage other women pursuing their goals while raising a family.
“I would encourage women to take it one day at a time and give themselves grace,” she said. “It’s okay to ask for help and trust God through every season.”
She added that practical support systems, whether from family or trusted caregivers, can also help ease the pressure of balancing responsibilities, allowing women to continue pursuing their education without guilt.
For Jarrett, the journey has been a reminder that with faith in God, the support of loved ones, and perseverance through difficult seasons, even life’s most demanding challenges can become a testimony of strength and hope.
