Teach our children honesty, justice, mercy

President of the Jamaica Teachers Association La Sonja Harrison is raising concerns about the values being promoted among Jamaican children. She argued that schools have an important role to play in nurturing students’ character and helping them to develop a strong moral foundation.

She identified honesty, justice, mercy, diligence, discipline and love for others as essential values that should be instilled from an early age.

According to Harrison, these principles  are necessary for building a healthier society. She also emphasised the importance of teaching children to respect others, work diligently, act responsibly and understand that their character is more important than their material possessions.

“The true man, the measure of a man, it speaks to his character, his integrity, who he is as a person,” she said.

Acknowledging that people may disagree with her position, Harrison maintained that the principles she advocates are intended to support human flourishing and should not be dismissed without consideration.
