The Big AI Bill: Is artificial intelligence too pricey to pursue?

Artificial intelligence (AI), once promoted as a cost-saving alternative to human labour, is proving far more expensive for many businesses than anticipated, according to a recent Forbes analysis.

 Companies investing in the technology are facing mounting expenses for cloud computing, AI model tokens, data storage, cybersecurity, maintenance, and the human oversight required to monitor systems and correct errors, raising fresh questions about whether AI is delivering the financial savings many expected.

Rather than replacing workers at a lower cost, many organisations are discovering that AI still requires significant investment in both technology and skilled employees. While businesses continue to invest billions of dollars in AI, experts say the technology remains heavily dependent on people to verify AI-generated content, identify inaccuracies, and ensure systems operate reliably.

This has fuelled a wider international debate over whether AI is living up to expectations of boosting productivity while lowering operating costs. Although AI can automate repetitive tasks and improve efficiency in some areas, analysts say many companies have underestimated the ongoing costs associated with deploying and maintaining the technology at scale.

Environmental groups have also raised concerns about the growing energy demands of advanced AI systems. Large-scale AI models require significant computing power, placing increased pressure on data centres and electricity networks while raising questions about the long-term environmental impact of widespread AI adoption.

Despite the technology’s potential to transform industries, the Forbes analysis suggests that artificial intelligence is proving far more costly than many businesses initially expected. From expensive computing infrastructure and cybersecurity to ongoing maintenance and the need for skilled workers to monitor AI systems, the financial burden continues to grow.
